Yesterday, crowds gathered at the National Mall, excited to see the final flight of Discovery before she made her way to the National Air and Space Museum. It was a spectacular, once-in-a-lifetime sight that everyone enjoyed.
Parents and grandparents remembered the days when a trip to the moon was unfathomable, and children looked eagerly at the sky, imagining what it would be like to be in that shuttle.
We were fortunate enough to be able to view the enormous shuttle here at Cherry Hill Park! Here is a picture that a guest took from the ground:
If you have not been, I highly recommend a visit to the Air and Space Museum. The exhibits are spectacular and you’ll be able to see Discovery up close!
Get Ready for the Kwanzan Blooms
It was an early but successful Cherry Blossom season. They were spectacular as usual and lasted quite a while despite the early arrival of spring.
Even though the Tidal Basin trees are done, the related Kwanzan Cherry Tree is just about to bloom. Cherry Hill Park has a number of those as well as the Yeoshino Cherry and we will post some pictures as they come out next week.
Cherry Hill Park Goes Green
Cherry Hill Park is green. Yes, we have grass, trees, shrubs and flowers, but we are also green in environmental initiatives. Whether you believe in climate change or not, utilizing local energy is beneficial in many ways. Here are a few changes we’ve made in the past years:
Since 2010, our electricity has been generated at wind farms in our region. And not only do we use wind power, but we also use the sun. We have solar arrays to make electricity for our office, hot water for our Conference Center, which includes the laundry, 4 sets of bathrooms, and our café. We also use solar arrays to heat our pools and our hot tub.
Recycling is a big part of our operation. All guests need to do to participate is drop recyclable materials in the blue bins located at all trash stations. Thanks to our guests, we collected fifteen 50 gallon bags of recycling material every day last summer!
In 2010, Cherry Hill Park won the campground industry’s “PLAN-IT-GREEN” award for our efforts in environmentally sound practices. Whether it is energy efficient lighting or water reduction, many of these practices not only save resources, but they also save us money over time.
Recently, owner Mike Gurevich was interviewed by Evanne Schmarder regarding the Green practices at Cherry Hill Park. The video was made with campground operators in mind, but the applications apply everywhere. If you are interested, here is a link to that interview.
